Why metering belongs in the curriculum
Ears are the final judge of a mix, but they are not a stable reference. Perceived loudness shifts with monitor gain, room acoustics, and fatigue over a long session. A meter is the one reference in the room that does not drift, which is why engineers learn to trust it alongside what they hear.
That trust only holds if the engineer knows what each meter is for. Sample peak, VU, and PPM meters all show level, but each answers a different question. A sample peak meter shows how close the signal is to clipping, so it is the one to watch when setting record levels and checking a final master. A VU meter shows average level, which makes it the mixer’s tool for balancing dialogue, music, and vocals. A PPM sits between the two, catching quick bursts while staying easy to read.
On a professional job, meters are a shared language. That is why metering is worth teaching directly rather than leaving to chance. Playing one piece of program through Sample Peak, VU, PPM, and a K-scale side by side shows students headroom, crest factor, and ballistics in a single lab, on the same tools they will meet in their careers.

Who qualifies and how it works
The program is open worldwide to three groups:
- Students currently enrolled at an accredited high school, college, university, or vocational or certificate program, including part-time and online programs.
- Teachers, faculty, and staff currently employed by an accredited educational institution, including instructors at Avid Learning Partner schools.
- Institutions buying for their own classrooms, labs, and studios.
Requesting a code takes three steps:
- Fill out the short form on the education page, ideally from a school email address and with a link to your program or faculty page.
- Evergreen Audio reviews each request personally and may ask for a dated student or staff ID or an enrollment letter.
- A 40% discount code arrives by email for use at checkout. The license is delivered to your iLok account.
For educators and institutions
The tools were built for shared rooms, which makes them a natural fit for teaching. Meter Bridge or Meter Bridge Pro can run on a projector or second screen so the whole class watches the instructor’s levels in real time.
