1. Introduction

Evergreen Audio provides a collection of tools to allow music, post production, live sound, and broadcast studios to meter audio in a flexible and configurable way. The tools provide sophisticated tools aimed at the professional mix engineer to work faster, more accurately, and more efficiently.

The Mini Meter plugin (Pro Tools AAX and VST3), Massive Meter plugin (Pro Tools AAX and VST3) or Massive Meter Pro plugin (Pro Tools AAX Native and DSP and VST3) work as standalone plugins or in conjunction with the Meter Bridge and Meter Bridge Pro applications to display all meters in a single, flexible view.

The Mini Meter and Meter Bridge for macOS and iOS provide a free metering solution to create a sophisticated metering solution for small studios or educational environments.

Stepping up to the Massive Meter and Massive Meter Pro combined with either the Meter Bridge or Meter Bridge Pro, the system expands to provide advanced metering and extensive customization to meter exactly as the workflow requires.

When working with multiple mix engineers each engineer can run their own Meter Bridge Pro application and configure and display which meter plugins they are most interested in seeing. This allows each mix engineer to have a personal view of meter information independent of others.

2. Products Overview

As part of Evergreen Audio products, there are several pieces of software that can be used independently or together to create simple to very sophisticated workflows.

3. Installation

There are installers for the different products. The combination installer (Evergreen Audio.pkg) installs all Evergreen Audio products while allowing installation of specific products. The individual installers install the individual products allowing for quick and easy installation.

In Pro Tools, the Massive Meter plugin is grouped under the Evergreen Audio company name and appears in the Sound Field category.

4. Getting Started - Quick Start

The fastest way to get started is to launch Pro Tools and instantiate the Mini Meter, Massive Meter, or Massive Meter Pro plugin and launch the Meter Bridge or Meter Bridge Pro application.

The plugins can be found under the Evergreen Audio company name and appear in the Sound Field category.

Once the Meter Bridge application is launched, a Configuration document is created and the Add and Remove Systems dialog is opened. The Pro Tools system with the Massive Meter plugin and the currently selected CoreAudio device should appear as Massive Meter. Select the checkbox for Massive Meter and click OK.

The System "Massive Meter" and the Massive Meter plugin should be displayed in the main user interface of the Meter Bridge Application.

5. Configurations and Templates - Meter Bridge Pro Only

At a glance: a Configuration remembers a specific Pro Tools system. A Template matches generic system/plugin names instead, so the same layout auto-connects across many sessions.

The Meter Bridge Pro application supports saving and restoring layouts along with automatic detection and connection to the Massive Meter plugins hosted in Pro Tools systems. This provides minimal setup and configuration time when managing complex workflows.

5.1 Configurations

The Meter Bridge Pro Configuration allows saving of specific Pro Tools systems. This stores the unique identification of the Pro Tools systems it is connected to and displays any Meter plugins that are in the Pro Tools system.

To create a new Configuration, select the File menu and the New Configuration option. Shortcut: Command-N.

5.2 Templates

The Meter Bridge Pro Template provides a mechanism to create a specific template based on the Pro Tools system name (set in the Massive Meter Plugin Settings) and Massive Meter plugin names.

The Template allows the mix engineer to create Templates that match their Pro Tools templates based on generic names. The Meter Bridge Pro automatically connects to the named Pro Tools systems and to the named Massive Meter plugins. This allows the mix engineer to switch Pro Tools sessions and use the same Meter Bridge Pro Template for many sessions.

Use the + and - icons to add and remove both systems and meters. Use the text editing fields to change the name of the System and Meters. Use the popup menus to select the channel format for the specific meter.

The "Include Audio Device" checkbox will add the current CoreAudio device to the Template. The CoreAudio device will be displayed based on the selected Audio Device Settings.

6. Audio Device Settings

At a glance: Audio Device Settings let the Meter Bridge / Meter Bridge Pro meter a CoreAudio device directly - independent of any plugin. macOS only.

The Meter Bridge application supports up to 8 channels of CoreAudio input (mono/stereo). The Meter Bridge Pro application supports up to 384 channels of CoreAudio input in any standard format.

6.1 Metering CoreAudio

The Meter Bridge and Meter Bridge Pro application supports metering CoreAudio devices and creating customized meter layouts.

To enable CoreAudio metering, open the "Audio Device Settings…" menu item under the "Setup" menu. Shortcut: Command-Shift-A.

The Audio Device Settings dialog enables you to create, load, and modify meter settings for specific CoreAudio devices. Settings files are stored in the Documents folder in the "Meter Bridge Device Settings" folder - copy them to and from this folder when moving between computers.

6.3 Device Settings Fields

Field	Description
Meter Settings	Selects an existing settings file from the "Meter Bridge Device Settings" folder.
Display Name	Sets the name shown for this CoreAudio device, for easier identification in the Add Audio Device and main windows.
Input	Selects which CoreAudio device is used from the currently available devices.
Sample Rate	Sets the device's sample rate. Note: if multiple applications share the device, this changes the rate for all of them.
Buffer Size	Sets the device's buffer size. Note: if multiple applications share the device, this changes the buffer size for all of them.

6.4 Creating, Deleting, and Default Meters

Button	What it does
New Meter	Creates a new meter and displays it in a row.
Delete Meter	Deletes the meters associated with any selected row(s).
Default Meter	Creates a new meter for each channel available on the CoreAudio device.

6.5 Saving Changes and Canceling Changes

Clicking OK closes the Audio Device Settings dialog and offers the option to cancel the changes, save to the existing file, or save to a new file. If no changes were made, OK simply closes the dialog without prompting.

6.6 Changing Meters

Each meter can have its name, format, and channel mapping changed.

To change the meter name, double click on the text display of the meter name - the field becomes editable. Type a new name and hit Enter to save it.

The meter format can be changed via its popup; selecting a new format clears the channel mapping.

To map input channels to meter channels, drag and drop the meter label from the I/O section onto the appropriate channel. Drag it to a new channel, or back to the I/O section, to change or clear the mapping.

7. Customizing and Managing Meters - Meter Bridge Pro Only

At a glance: naming, coloring, scaling, focusing, folding, grouping, and linking meters are all Meter Bridge Pro - only features.

The Meter Bridge Pro application and the Massive Meter plugin provide many features for customizing and managing meters.

7.1 Meter Names

Click on a meter name to reveal an icon, then a text edit field, to change the meter's name (or a linked meter's name). For linked meters, clearing the name reverts it to the default - a combination of the linked meters' names.

7.2 Meter Colors

Click on the meter name to reveal the icon, which opens a color picker to select the meter's color.

7.3 Meter Scaling

The Meter Bridge Pro application and the Massive Meter plugin support scaling the meter indicators - application-wide in Meter Bridge Pro, per-plugin in Massive Meter. Useful for focusing on a specific range of interest.

7.4 Meter Focus - Meter Bridge Pro application only

Focuses a specific meter by zooming it to fill the entire main window. Double-click a meter indicator to focus it; double-click again to return to showing all meters.

7.5 Meter Fold Down - Meter Bridge Pro application only

Folds a multichannel meter into a consolidated mono meter. Option-double-click a meter indicator to fold it down; Option-double-click again to restore all channels. A folded meter's label reads "CR," and shows the individual channel with the loudest signal.

7.6 Meter Groups - application only

Groups meters together into a Meter Group, associated with a system.

In Universe View, meters from any system can be added to any Meter Group. In Standard View, only meters belonging to that system appear in the group.

7.7 Meter Linking - application only

Links meters of the same type together - even across different systems. A linked meter shows a combined name and interlaced indicators in the original meters' colors. Useful for comparing meters, e.g. in PED/Direct workflows.

7.8 Show and Hide Systems, Meters, and Meter Groups - application

Click the System Name element to reveal the show/hide meters icon, then click it to show/hide any meter in that system. The application's View menu also has options for showing and hiding systems, meters, and meter groups directly.

7.9 Organizing Meters and Systems - application only

Click and drag a system or meter label to move it; a blue vertical line shows where it will land. In Universe View, meters can be arranged in any order; in Standard View, arrangement is constrained to each meter's own system.

8. Timecode Display - Meter Bridge Pro Only

The Meter Bridge Pro desktop application has a Timecode Display that shows timecode from a selected MIDI Timecode input (MTC), in a separate floating window or in the main window.

8.1 Setting Up an MTC Input Source

The application preferences' Timecode tab contains the settings for configuring the incoming MTC source. Use the MTC Input menu to select a source. The MTC source itself is configured in Pro Tools (or another DAW) and in the macOS Audio MIDI Setup application - consult your DAW's documentation for how to configure MTC generation.

8.2 Customizing the Timecode Display

The application preferences let you customize the timecode window's font, display location, and whether it always floats on top of other application windows.

8.3 Last Frame Of Action

Loads a file containing pairs of timecode values indicating the last frame of action of a reel and the corresponding timecode value to synchronize with - allowing multiple reels to play consecutively with a linear or custom timecode value across reels.

Setting	Description
Frame Rate	Sets the frame rate of the Last Frame Of Action file. Should match the file's timecode values and the incoming MTC source's frame rate.
Load File	Loads a Last Frame Of Action file from anywhere on the system. The location persists between application launches.
Clear File	Clears the current Last Frame Of Action file selection.

8.4 Last Frame Of Action File Format

A text file with pairs of timecode values separated by a space or tab, one pair per line. Example:

9. Shortcuts

The Meter Bridge Pro desktop application, the Meter Bridge iOS application, the Massive Meter plugin, and Massive Meter Pro plugin have several keyboard and mouse shortcuts allowing you to quickly change settings and work with Configurations and Templates.

9.1 Mouse Shortcuts

Change the meter scale	Click and drag the meter scale indicator based on the value clicked (e.g. click -40dB and drag to the bottom to set the range from -40dB to 0dB). Double-click to reset.

10. Preferences

At a glance: the Meter Bridge Pro application and Massive Meter plugin share most preference categories. Each preference below is marked as application-only, plugin-only, or both.

To access Meter Bridge Pro preferences, use the menu item under the Massive Meter Application name or the Setup menu (shortcut: Command-Shift-P). To access Massive Meter preferences, click the gear icon in the plugin's upper right corner.

10.1 Metering - application and plugin

Preset	App & plugin	Shortcut for setting a group of preferences to a common configuration. Not saved to Preferences itself.

Preference	Description
Custom Track Name	Overrides the plugin's displayed meter name (defaults to the track name). Clear the field to revert. Also used by Meter Bridge Pro to map plugins to meters in Templates.
Meter Delay (Massive Meter Pro only)	Delays a specific meter by a number of samples, for aligning meters out of sync due to complex routing.

10.5 System - application and plugin

Preference	Description
System Name (plugin)	Names the system the Massive Meter is on (e.g. Music, Dialog, Effects, Recorder) - shown throughout Meter Bridge Pro. System-wide setting, applies to all Massive Meter plugins on the computer.
Network Interface	Selects which network interface handles plugin ↔ application communication. Saved at the system level.
Version	Shows the software version number.

10.6 Timecode - application

Preference	Description
MTC Input	Selects the MIDI input device to read MTC from - should match the source in Pro Tools or your MTC generator.
Display In Meter Window	Shows the timecode readout at the top of the main window.
Use Small Header	Custom, smaller Timecode window header instead of the standard macOS header.
Always On Top	Keeps the Timecode window above others, e.g. the Pro Tools Mix/Edit window.

10.7 Audio Devices - application

Default Meter Name - sets the default name prefix for meters created in the Audio Device Setup dialog. Helpful for high-channel-count devices, e.g. auto-naming a 64-channel device "Onyx - 1," "Onyx - 2," etc.

11. Meter Bridge iOS Limitations

The Meter Bridge iOS application is a free companion application that can be run on an Apple iPad. Metering CoreAudio devices is not supported on iOS.

The Meter Bridge has several limitations when working with the Mini Meter, Massive Meter, and Massive Meter Pro plugins. It has additional functionality when connected to Massive Meter Pro plugins, and can connect to multiple Pro Tools systems running the Meter Bridge Pro plugin.

There are limitations when the Meter Bridge is connected to a Massive Meter plugin (AAX or VST3): the application only allows one system plugin host (Pro Tools or other DAW) to be connected at a time, and it does not allow mixing Massive Meter and Massive Meter Pro plugins.

12. About Us

The Evergreen Audio Design Group was founded by Bob Brown, who is the designer and software architect of the Meter Bridge and Massive Meter.

Bob Brown is a long time media industry software engineer. He worked as a team member of the Digidesign and Avid software engineering team. As part of the Pro Tools software team, he worked on many features including Avid Satellite, audio/video synchronization, collaboration, file interoperability, and many other features. He was also part of the DTS (Xperi) immersive audio software team developing DTS|X content creation tools including the MDA Creator Suite.

Downloads, Setup & Installation

The Meter Bridge and Meter Bridge Pro Configuration saves the Massive Meter unique identifier for each system that is connected. This allows the Massive Meter Bridge to monitor the network and find previously connected Massive Meters in a Pro Tools system. All Mini Meter, Massive Meter, and Massive Meter Pro plugins are automatically found and displayed as part of the Configuration.

The Meter Bridge Pro Template is a file format that saves the information about which Massive Meter or Massive Meter Pro host (Pro Tools or other DAW) as well as the specific plugins to display. The Template saves various information such as Linked and Grouped plugins such that it is easy to save and restore settings for the specific system. When using a Template, the name of the system in the Template must match the name of the Pro Tools system in the Massive Meter settings — capitalization and spaces included. Plugin names and channel formats need to match between the Template and Pro Tools Session too, so the Meter Bridge Pro can automatically find and connect the meters.

In Massive Meter settings (click the gear icon in the top right), you can name your Pro Tools or DAW system. This setting is stored in a settings file in the macOS user Preferences folder.

Create a Meter Bridge Pro Template that matches the Pro Tools session template, so the Bridge automatically connects to a new session when it's opened.

Double-click a meter to zoom it to fill the space, or use the magnifier icon in the upper right corner to zoom in/out.

Click and drag the meter tick marks left or right to change min/max/scaling. Command-click and drag to create multiple scale points. Double-click to reset to default. Each plugin can be scaled individually.

Hold Option and double-click a meter to fold it down; repeat to expand it. In the plugin itself, use the fold icon in the upper right bar.
